Et salt i tørr former en kjemisk forbindelse bestående av flere krystalliserte ioner.
I oseanografien er det en tradisjon for å uttrykke saltholdighet ikke i prosent, men i tusendeler somer omtrent det samme som gram salt pr liter sjøvann. Enheten “psu” (practical salinity unit) brukes også. Vanlige saltholdighetsverdier for sjøvann og havvann er 34–36.
Saltholdigheten sammen med temperaturen bestemmer tettheten til sjøvann.
Saltholdigheten til sjøvann måles gjennom konduktivitet. Konduktivitet er en egenskap et stoff har til å lede strøm. Ved å måle konduktiviteten gjennom vannet regnes det ut hvor mye salt som er i vannet.

Oksygen kommer i vannet ved overflaten der atmosfæren er i kontakt med vannet eller blir produsert av planteplankton gjennom fotosyntese.
Opptaket øker gjennom turbulent aktivitet, som for eksempel bølger.
Oksygennivået er størst ved overflaten og innholdet av oksygen kan dermed gi oseanografer informasjon om hvor lenge siden en vannmasse har vert ved overflaten.
Oksygennivået måles i mg/l men data vises is prosent oksygenmetning.

Turbiditet, er uklarheten i vannet og er forårsaket av et stort antall av partikler som generelt er usynlig for det blott øyet, i likhet med røyk i luft.
Turbiditeten er et viktigmål for vannkvaliteten.
Økt uklarhet kan komme av biologiske partikler som for eksempel plankton, sedimenter i vannet, eller annen type forurensing somfor eksempel støv eller kjemiske partikler.
