  • I oseanografien er det en tradisjon for å uttrykke saltholdighet ikke i prosent, men i tusendeler somer omtrent det samme som gram salt pr liter sjøvann. Enheten “psu” (practical salinity unit) brukes også. Vanlige saltholdighetsverdier for sjøvann og havvann er 34–36.
  • Saltholdigheten sammen med temperaturen bestemmer tettheten til sjøvann.
  • Saltholdigheten til sjøvann måles gjennom konduktivitet. Konduktivitet er en egenskap et stoff har til å lede strøm. Ved å måle konduktiviteten gjennom vannet regnes det ut hvor mye salt som er i vannet.
